![]() ![]() This chapter describes the emerging role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in the assessment of neonatal hemodynamics. Thomas’s Hospital Neonatal Units for their assistance with the project. David Cox, and the staff of Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital and St. Our hope is that as co-location of MRI technology with neonatal intensive care units becomes more common, CMR will fulfill its significant promise to advance clinical research and support improvements in mortality and morbidity in the vulnerable newborn through enhanced hemodynamic monitoring and support. This chapter summarizes areas of neonatal hemodynamics where there is significant residual uncertainty over pathophysiology and management provides a background to application of CMR in adult and newborns discusses the current and emerging CMR techniques and describes areas where CMR has already advanced understanding of developmental cardiovascular physiology and may in the future contribute to changes in the care of critically ill preterm and term neonates with cardiovascular compromise. The use of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is similarly the standard of care for the assessment of newborns with encephalopathy.ĬMR assessments of neonatal hemodynamic function are neither simple nor inexpensive, but they can be highly accurate and entirely noninvasive. ![]() While at the time of publication this approach remains in its infancy, the technique has begun to demonstrate its value in providing highly detailed insights into the pathophysiology of the neonatal circulation.ĬMR assessments in adults are now acknowledged as the gold standard clinical assessments of ventricular function, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, and complex congenital heart disease. ![]() ![]()
